Bishop Payne Divinity School. Records

The DFMS archive on the American Church Institute (ACI) is largely focused on the years 1906-1967, although documentation on individual schools dates from 1867 (see AO-00-R0061-02 through AO-00-R0061-02-12). This set includes records of the oversight of Bishop Payne Divinity School, Petersburg, Virginia. Records in this series consist mainly of correspondence, especially from the ACI Treasurer’s office concerning the school’s building fund (1932-1948, 1951), and also correspondence of the Rev. George A. Wieland, Home Department Director and later ACI Director (1929-1930, 1942-1951). Board of Trustees meeting minutes and correspondence (1938-1944, 1947-1948), financial documents (1939-1965), and two school catalogs (1945, 1946) are also present.

Special Committee on Theological Education in the Episcopal Church. Records

This collection consists of the Committee’s records as kept by Dr. Charles Taylor, the director of the study, and includes official minutes and reports, correspondence, data on seminaries, and planning and working documents of the Committee. Of note are copies of Nathan M. Pusey’s 1966 Report of the Special Committee titled “Ministry for Tomorrow,” which helped inform the study of theological education undertaken by the Committee and directed by Charles Taylor. Taylor’s work from 1957 to 1967 is well documented and there is correspondence from his time as the director of the American Association of Theological Schools from 1957. Correspondence and reports were generated and collected before, during, and after visits to a number of seminary and theological schools, including Berkeley Divinity School, Episcopal Theological Seminary, and Sewanee.

The records comprehensively cover Windham House's entire history and include minutes, director’s reports, and correspondence. Administrative files document Windham House's inception through its final director Johanna Mott. There is a solid set of financial records (1931-1973) with building plans, and records relating to the disposal of property. Alumni lists and correspondence exist as does a set of student records (1928-1967). A series of publications and typescripts about Windham House includes yearly catalogs and bulletins on the schools curriculum and academic life. The records also include a set of photographs.
