The records of the Joint Commission on Renewal consist primarily of meeting minutes, correspondence, reports drafted by the Commission, and printed materials about renewal written by members of the Commission. There is also a small amount of correspondence and records about financial matters.
Joint Commission on RenewalThese official bodies of General Convention are established and defined in Canon I.1.2(n), Canon I.5.1, Canon I.8.1, and Canon III.15.1, and meet throughout the triennium to facilitate the programmatic mission of the General Convention. Records in this series include minutes, correspondence, memos, reports, and administrative files.
General Convention Interim BodiesThese records primarily document Dr. Clifford P. Morehouse's six-year tenure as President of the House of Deputies (1961-1967) and include correspondence and General Convention meeting materials. A smaller group of materials including correspondence and reports documenting Morehouse’s involvement as a member of Executive Council rounds out the collection.
President of the House of DeputiesThis collection contains minutes of the House of Bishops meetings and special sessions.
House of BishopsThis collection comprises pastoral letters issued by the Bishops at General Conventions and during Special Sessions.
Various BishopsThe House of Bishops Committee Records comprise Standing Committee and ad hoc Committee reports, records, and miscellaneous materials. Also included is a bound volume of the minutes of the Commission of Bishops on the Mexican Branch of the Catholic Church.
House of BishopsThis collection consists of trial records related to The Diocese of Newark vs George Gaines Swanson, as appealed to the Court of Review of Province II in 1989-1990. The official record on appeal is bound in four volumes, with a table of contents in the first volume. Records in these volumes include the original presentment, related correspondence, motions and court orders, transcripts of court proceedings, exhibits, and the notice of appeal. Notable among the exhibits are correspondence between Swanson and John Shelby Spong, and a transcript of Swanson's version of events leading up to the appeal. Records of the appeal proceedings are unbound and include the Appellant's Brief on Appeal, the Appellant's Reply Brief, the Decision of the Court of Review and a transcript of telephone conversations between Swanson and Denise Haines, the Archdeacon of Urban Ministry for the Diocese of Newark.
Provincial Court of Review for Province IIThis small collection documents the work of the Rev. John F. Stevens in his role as Coordinator of the 1973 General Convention. Included are minutes, reports, correspondence, financial data and information regarding the planning and organizing of the 1973 General Convention.
Executive Office of the General ConventionEcclesiastical jurisdictional records include filings maintained by the General Convention Office as supporting documentation on the establishment of diocesan and provincial jurisdictions.
Executive Office of the General ConventionThe records of the Office of the Presiding Bishop consist of minutes, reports, and correspondence primarily from the period when the Most Reverend John Maury Allin was Presiding Bishop. Some materials date from Allin’s successor, Edmund Lee Browning. Also included are materials relating to the Presiding Bishop’s Fund for World Relief and the Venture in Mission program.
Office of the Presiding BishopThis archive consists of materials that document the Office of the Suffragan Bishop for the Armed Forces from when General Convention established the Office of the Suffragan Bishop to 1975. Earlier materials collected by the office relate to the history and legislation on military chaplains date back to 1924. Included in the collection are meeting minutes, correspondence, diocesan files, topical files, records of grant applications and conferences, and publicity materials.
Office of the Suffragan Bishop for the Armed ForcesThe Executive Council meeting dockets were generated through the work of the members and staff of the committees and commissions of the Executive Council. They include agendas, minutes of meetings, charters, status reports as well as financial statements and reports, budgets, and Treasurer's reports.
The records and reports reflect the policies of the General Convention as carried out and administered by the Executive Council as well as the structure and organization of the church.
Executive CouncilThis collection consists of periodicals that were created for leaders in the field of Christian education as well as students and parents and covers two periods with a noticeable gap: 1927-1947 and 1953-1982. The publications provide guidance and leadership in the field and also serve as a forum to unify discussion and exchange current ideas on education.
Department of Christian EducationThe Records of Venture in Mission reflect the early years of the program and include administrative records, correspondence, committee reports, and records relating to projects and fundraising efforts in individual domestic and foreign dioceses.
Venture in MissionThis small collection documents an effort between the Episcopal Church and the Church of England to set up and maintain an exchange program across different polities and forms of church governance. It contains views of life in both countries and a case study of the relations between the churches in a joint program. The records consist of correspondence, most of which is with or by Warren Turner, Jr., as well as photographs.
