Seven scrapbook volumes comprise this collection of Samuel F. Hotchkin’s articles and interests. Each volume contains an index. The articles cover a variety of subjects, persons, and places. Of note are a typescript index to the scrapbooks and a copy of Hotchkin’s obituary.

The Papers of John Torok consist primarily of correspondence with some legal or ecclesiastical documents. Torok’s correspondence centers largely on his own efforts to serve as an ordained person in the U.S. Episcopal Church. The material has value to understanding the complexity in ecumenical relationships in the inter-war period. The various legal, diplomatic, medical, and academic documents, including depositions, transcripts of an interrogation that Torok received at the hands of the Economic Warfare division in 1942, and the confession of William Emhardt of the National Council regarding his attempt to undermine Torok in 1924.

Torok’s writings in this collection are primarily ecclesiastical and relate to Count Michael Karolyi, who was briefly the leader of the First Hungarian People’s Republic, 1918-1919. Torok had served under him in the State Department.

The papers of Peter Gray Sears document his life and career as a southern priest at the end of the 19th century and his move to the rapidly growing city of Houston, Texas at the beginning of the 20th century. The majority of the collection is correspondence between Sears and his friends and colleagues, including Bishop Hugh Miller Thompson and Bishop George Herbert Kinsolving. There are also letters to and from family members, including his son Claudius Wistar Sears and his wife. Also included are sermons dating from the early 1900s preached in various churches in Mississippi and Texas.

This extensive collection documents three activities that Edward West held as central throughout his life: (1) his long career as Canon Sacrist, Sub-Dean, and Master of Ceremonies at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City, (2) his service as Chaplain to the United States National Guard, and (3) his devotion to liturgy and the church’s observance of the ceremonial, including many artistic achievements in the areas of heraldry and architectural motif. The archive contains sermons, addresses, original artwork, correspondence, photographs, audio recordings, news clippings, and awards and honoraria from the period 1930-1990 with some collected works as early as 1903 and as late as 1992.

This collection comprises the personal papers of the Rt. Rev. Walter Righter, from early adulthood through his retirement, with writings added up to the year 2009. Included are: records collected by Righter before, during, and after his trial for heresy; materials relating to his ministerial career; and family history and genealogy research.

Records of St. Paul’s contain legal documents on the founding of the school, Board of Trustees records and meeting minutes (1897, 1940-1951) and minutes of the Executive Committee (1940-1951), as well as reports from the principal from 1938 to 1957. Financial documentation spans 1935 to 1957 and includes budgets, treasurer’s reports, and audit reports. ACI director’s correspondence (1911-1953) occurs with St. Paul’s Board of Trustees members and school administration and covers financial, personnel, construction, and curricular topics. Correspondence from the Home Department Director (1949-1953) addresses a variety of topics including the search for a new president after the Rev. J. Alvin Russell’s retirement. School publications from 1907-1948 include historical pamphlets, bulletins, and some issues of the Southern Missioner. The fonds includes a survey report of the school by the George Peabody College for Teachers (1946).

This set of records contains by-laws of the school (1892, 1937) and records of the school’s Board of Trustees, including meeting minutes and correspondence (1940-1944), annual reports (1919-1921), and reports to the National Council (1933, 1941). Also present is considerable correspondence by the ACI Director (1940-1945) and Treasurer (1939-1944) on school matters. Financial records (1940-1945) and Calhoun pamphlets (1905, 1937) complete the series.

The archive contains mostly correspondence of the director, charter and by-laws, Trustee records, personnel files, programs of study, some addresses, and ephemera; organized to recognize the two school entities.

This record group consists of seven hand-written documents which record the founding of the Dominican Episcopal Church in 1897, and the ordination of its leader, Benjamin I. Wilson, in 1898, under the aegis of the Haitian Orthodox Apostolic Church. Other historic documents, typescripts, and photographs represent the genesis and development of the Dominican Episcopal Church. Included are a “Covenant of Understanding” signed by Wilson and Bishop James Holly of the Haitian Church, and a testimonial in French signed by Monsieur A. Battiste, Chancellor of the Haitian Church. Also noteworthy are the Articles of Government of the Church of the Holy Trinity, a one-page document signed by representatives of the Church.

The papers of Augustus Reginald Hoare comprise a small group of materials consisting of three diaries, two periodicals, two photographs, and one letter. The diaries cover the last years of Hoare's missionary service in Alaska (1912-1920), with a gap for the years 1918-1919 when he was in California. Most diary entries merely refer to daily conditions. The periodicals contain references to Hoare in articles concerning the Alaskan missions. Of interest is a letter from Bishop Peter T. Rowe of Alaska dated August 24, 1920 explaining the circumstances of Augustus Hoare's death.

Bishop Scarlett's papers reflect his keen sense of social activism and interest in current events. Almost half the papers in this record group consists of Scarlett's sermons and addresses. Personal writings, correspondence, committee and commission records, photographs, scrapbooks, and ephemera round out the collection.

The Quin Papers include over 700 sermons, a complete set of pocket diaries, scrapbooks, ledgers documenting clergy received and transferred, ordinations, and postulants in the Diocese of Texas, letters of ordination, printed material, appreciations, correspondence and other materials pertaining to Bishop Quin. Also included is a notebook belonging to Mrs. Hortense Quin from the 1946 Triennial meeting and typescript notes for addresses she wrote regarding those meetings.

Sermons, addresses, clippings, correspondence and photographs are found in this selection of Bishop Manning’s papers. Newspaper and magazine clippings chronicle some of more controversial events in his service as Bishop of New York, such as the Judge Lindsey dispute of 1930. A small group of correspondence includes letters and postcards sent by Bishop Manning to a variety of recipients. Also included are seven 8" x 10" photographs of Manning dating from 1922-1944.

Agnes Mahony’s personal papers consist entirely of correspondence mostly between Mahony and a fellow missionary in Liberia, Nathan Matthews.

The papers of Frederic W. Fitts include sermons, commentaries, observations, and writings relating to the liturgy, worship protocols, and sacramental elements of Christian life.
