Diocesan and Parish Records and Collections

  • DP
  • Record group

Primary source records received from parishes or Dioceses by canonical requirement or within the collection policy of the Archives, or deposited by an independent church entity for safekeeping. Records of missionary districts and pre-Executive Council missionary fields and jurisdictions are generally maintained in the Foreign Mission class (MP-02 or MP-04).

DFMS Administrative Operations

This class is used to hold the executive-level records related to the supervision and administration of DFMS operations, especially, but not exclusively, the records of the Chief Operating Officer and functions overseen by that person and staff (e.g. IT/T, property management, human resources). Records may include records relating to the organization of the Mission Program units, internal management policies, staff-wide development projects, and activities.

Episcopal Church Annuals. Accumulating Collection

The Archives holds what appears to constitute a full set of Church Annuals dating from 1810 through present day. These annuals were published under various titles by multiple publishers, which were often published simultaneously, merged and/or renamed, resulting in an overlapping listing of titles and dates of publication.

Various Publishers

General Convention Sessions

Records and official papers of the legislative sessions in joint gathering, including the legislative and special committee records (minutes, documents and other papers, including sanctioned audio, video, and electronic recordings of the proceedings.

General Convention. Memorials and Petitions

These records contain memorials and petitions that were submitted to the General Convention, via either the House of Bishops or the House of Deputies, between 1853 and 1949. Memorials and petitions urge the Church to commend or commemorate a person, event, or other matter, or to take a stance on an issue that could result in official legislative action.

General Convention

Governing Bodies of General Convention

Records of official canonical standing committees and commissions, boards, joint house committees, task groups, and similar authorized ad hoc bodies acting in the interim and at the direction of the General Convention; may include records either generated directly by the interim body or collected as part of the central files of the Secretariat. The category does not include the separate category of Executive Council, which also acts as the board of directors for the DFMS and may act in the place of (rather at the direction of) the General Convention.

Committee on the Observance of the Nation's Bicentennial. Records

The committee’s records reflect the work done to create a vehicle for crafting projects and resources for parishes to celebrate the role of religion in marking the country’s bicentennial of independence. Records were also generated by two subcommittees of the Bicentennial Committee: Budget and “Forward Look”, to define future directions for the Church, especially in relation to the Bicentennial theme, "liberty and justice for all.” The latter committee met in 1975 and was chaired by Hodding Carter III. The committee’s records show their full engagement in a planning agenda. Emphasis was given to a special issue Anglican Theological Review (55:1) and the plans for the General Convention program and exhibit. Other publications relating to the Bicentennial are present, including writings on the topic by Presiding Bishop John Allin.

House of Deputies

Official Papers of the President's office, the Secretary of the House, committees of the House (e.g. the State of the Church), publications and communications generated by and within the House not pertaining directly to the triennial session.

Forward Movement. Records

A small and somewhat artificial collection of the organization’s records are maintained as Series 4 of the Records of Forward Movement. It includes early records, especially the Joint Commission’s report, a scrapbook (compiled by the Bishop Edward L. Parsons), correspondence and some ephemera. The Parsons scrapbook was left intact for its artifactual value. It serves as a record of the early years of Forward Movement from 1935-1937. Catalogs make up a large part of the records and document the agency's publication run. Some promotional materials exist from 1934-1943.

National Graduate Training Center (Windham House). Records

The records comprehensively cover Windham House's entire history and include minutes, director’s reports, and correspondence. Administrative files document Windham House's inception through its final director Johanna Mott. There is a solid set of financial records (1931-1973) with building plans, and records relating to the disposal of property. Alumni lists and correspondence exist as does a set of student records (1928-1967). A series of publications and typescripts about Windham House includes yearly catalogs and bulletins on the schools curriculum and academic life. The records also include a set of photographs.
