White, (Rt. Rev.) William. Papers

This collection contains primary sources created, collected, and/or annotated by William White and his descendants, including correspondence, sermons and manuscripts, financial and family estate records, printed illustrations and photographs, and research materials. The collection covers a broad period from 1643 to 1957, although the bulk of White’s papers dates from around 1784 to 1836, when White was most active in the Episcopal Church until his death.

This record group consists entirely of awarded grant files for the years 1978 to 1987, with the bulk of the records covering dates from 1979 to 1983. The grantees reflected in these files include Episcopal parishes in the United States, Anglican parishes or dioceses abroad, ecumenical groups, and social welfare organizations. Common types of grant proposals include building projects, equipment and transportation purchases (especially for overseas dioceses), and budget support for childcare, health, and education programs associated with Episcopal dioceses.

Spong, (Rt. Rev.) John Shelby. Project Records

This archive documents the records created by John Shelby Spong as he conducted research for an unfinished biography of former Presiding Bishop John Elbridge Hines, whom Spong admired for his courageous civil rights activism. Included are audio interviews recorded with and about Hines between 1974 and 1975, fifty-three of which have been digitized by the Archives. Research materials related to Spong’s planning and execution of the project, as well as his gathered documentation on the various stages of Hines’ ministry, round out the collection.

Standing Commission on Church Music. Records

The records include detailed meeting minutes, budgets, and other administrative files, many of which document the preparation and publishing of The Hymnal 1982. Commission projects, research, and liturgical resources illustrate influences on the Commission’s decision making. Bland Tucker and Massey Shepherd figure largely among a number of interesting papers, statements, and Commission publications and publicity files. The Chilton Powell Institute program on the preparation of services in the Proposed Book of Common Prayer are documented. General correspondence is found throughout the files, giving evidence of the diverse associations of the Commission to commentators, contributors, and musicians.

The Emhardt papers consist primarily of correspondence and minutes and reports of organizations with which he was connected, specifically the Christian Unity Foundation and the Anglican and Eastern Association. Records from miscellaneous committees and organizations of which Emhardt was also associated, including the Committee for Church Work Among Foreign-Born Americans, round out the collection.

Sears, (Rev.) Peter Gray. Papers

The papers of Peter Gray Sears document his life and career as a southern priest at the end of the 19th century and his move to the rapidly growing city of Houston, Texas at the beginning of the 20th century. The majority of the collection is correspondence between Sears and his friends and colleagues, including Bishop Hugh Miller Thompson and Bishop George Herbert Kinsolving. There are also letters to and from family members, including his son Claudius Wistar Sears and his wife. Also included are sermons dating from the early 1900s preached in various churches in Mississippi and Texas.

The Papers of the Reverend Canon Robert Brooks contains material mostly related to Brooks’ time as Director of Government Relations from 1988-1998. It also brings together many of his professional roles including: the Standing Liturgical Commission consultant and member; Texas Statewide Health Coordinating Council board member; senior advisor to the president of the People for the American Way Foundation; Center for National Policy board member; and President of the Episcopal Urban Caucus, a position that he held until 2017.
