Abstract

The Episcopal Commission for Black Ministries (ECBM) was created at the Louisville General Convention in October of 1973, with the mission to develop, promote, and coordinate the concerns of Black Episcopalians. In 1974 the actual operation of the committee began and the Rev. Franklin D. Turner was appointed as Coordinator. He served in that position, and later as Staff Officer, until 1982. The Rev. Canon Harold T. Lewis replaced Turner in 1983. The role of the Coordinator was to administer grant programs, call conferences, act as an information source, aid local congregations, assist clergy deployment, provide support for colleges and groups, award scholarships, and generate work in Christian Education.
