Episcopal Church Annuals. Accumulating Collection

The Archives holds what appears to constitute a full set of Church Annuals dating from 1810 through present day. These annuals were published under various titles by multiple publishers, which were often published simultaneously, merged and/or renamed, resulting in an overlapping listing of titles and dates of publication.

Various Publishers

White, (Rt. Rev.) William. Papers

This collection contains primary sources created, collected, and/or annotated by William White and his descendants, including correspondence, sermons and manuscripts, financial and family estate records, printed illustrations and photographs, and research materials. The collection covers a broad period from 1643 to 1957, although the bulk of White’s papers dates from around 1784 to 1836, when White was most active in the Episcopal Church until his death.

The Living Church. Publication

This collection is primarily composed of bound volumes and single issues of The Living Church magazine. The bound volumes, which begin with Volume 3 (May 6, 1880-April 30, 1881) and continue through Volume 245 (July-December, 2012), were bound for and explicitly donated to the Archives as preservation copies by The Living Church Foundation. Single issues begin with Volume 246, number 1 (January 6, 2013), and continue through the present day. The Archives also holds Volume 1 (November 2, 1878-October 30, 1879) and Volume 2 (November 6, 1879-May 6, 1880) on microfilm only.

Henry Forrester’s working papers primarily document his domestic missionary activity in New Mexico and include four bound volumes of correspondence sent and received beginning with the final months of his rectorship in Terry, Mississippi (1874), through his early services in Santa Fe, Las Vegas, and Albuquerque. Also represented in the archive is a scrapbook volume titled “Forresteriana,” which covers the period 1871 to 1880 and includes clippings on topics of concern to him, news items on his work, published letters, and tracts written by Forrester for his work with the Spanish speaking population of the territory.

Talbot (Rt. Rev.), Joseph Cruikshank. Diaries

The papers of Joseph Talbot document his time as Missionary Bishop of the North West and as bishop coadjutor of the Diocese of Indiana through his death in 1883. The collection consists mainly of a set of pocket diaries kept by Talbot over the period 1856-1882 which gives insight into his daily activities. Also included is a typescript copy of Talbot’s journal of a trip to Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada between May and December of 1863. It offers a reasonably detailed description of travels in the American West at a time when transportation and accommodations were primitive or even dangerous.

Episcopal Diocese of Haiti and San Pedro de Macoris of the Iglesia Episcopal Dominicana. Records

This record group consists of seven hand-written documents which record the founding of the Dominican Episcopal Church in 1897, and the ordination of its leader, Benjamin I. Wilson, in 1898, under the aegis of the Haitian Orthodox Apostolic Church. Other historic documents, typescripts, and photographs represent the genesis and development of the Dominican Episcopal Church. Included are a “Covenant of Understanding” signed by Wilson and Bishop James Holly of the Haitian Church, and a testimonial in French signed by Monsieur A. Battiste, Chancellor of the Haitian Church. Also noteworthy are the Articles of Government of the Church of the Holy Trinity, a one-page document signed by representatives of the Church.

Hoare (Rev.), Augustus Reginald. Papers

The papers of Augustus Reginald Hoare comprise a small group of materials consisting of three diaries, two periodicals, two photographs, and one letter. The diaries cover the last years of Hoare's missionary service in Alaska (1912-1920), with a gap for the years 1918-1919 when he was in California. Most diary entries merely refer to daily conditions. The periodicals contain references to Hoare in articles concerning the Alaskan missions. Of interest is a letter from Bishop Peter T. Rowe of Alaska dated August 24, 1920 explaining the circumstances of Augustus Hoare's death.

St. Philip's Normal and Industrial School. Records

The ACI series relating to St. Philip’s School is primarily the ACI director’s correspondence (1921-1937), which details the reasons that St. Philip’s was never made an official ACI school. St. Philip’s publications providing historical background include a brochure (c.1920s) and Opportunity (1923-1924, 1929). Documents relating to ACI’s financial appropriations to the school (1921, 1923, 1931, n.d.), correspondence of the Bishop of West Texas (1921-1922), and a report of an evaluative visit to the school (1926) complete this set of records.

St. Mark's School. Records

ACI records on St. Mark’s School include the school’s Board of Trustees meeting minutes (1931-1935) and its report to ACI in 1912. Correspondence of founding board member J. A. Van Hoose (1912) and principal Rev. C. W. Brooks (1924) are very brief. Financial records relate to the school’s mortgage (1933-1936). ACI officers’ correspondence covers 1930 to 1940. Historical summaries (1934, c.1940) and a report of the school (1935) provide information about the establishment of St. Mark’s and its programs. The school’s disassociation from ACI in 1941 is touched upon in a Committee on Negro Work report (n.d.) and an ACI memo (1941).
