Abstract

English by birth, the Rev. Augustus Reginald Hoare (1871-1920) went to Alaska during the Klondike gold rush of 1898. In 1902 he began work as a missionary for the Rt. Rev. Peter T. Rowe. He was ordained to the diaconate in 1902 and to the priesthood in 1903. By 1904, he was simultaneously directing four missionary stations in Alaska due to a shortage of missionaries in the area. He assumed rectorship of the Point Hope Mission in Alaska in 1907. Owing to illness, Hoare left Point Hope in 1917 to convalesce in California. He returned in 1920 only to be murdered by a mentally ill individual, Mr. McQuire, who he had taken on as an assistant.

Content and structure elements

Scope and content

The papers of Augustus Reginald Hoare comprise a small group of materials consisting of three diaries, two periodicals, two photographs, and one letter. The diaries cover the last years of Hoare's missionary service in Alaska (1912-1920), with a gap for the years 1918-1919 when he was in California. Most diary entries merely refer to daily conditions. The periodicals contain references to Hoare in articles concerning the Alaskan missions. Of interest is a letter from Bishop Peter T. Rowe of Alaska dated August 24, 1920 explaining the circumstances of Augustus Hoare's death.
