- Abstract: In 1963 the position of Executive Officer for Ecumenical Matters as an advisory officer to the Presiding Bishop was created and Mr. Peter Day was appointed to the office. The Ecumenical Officer served as the focal point for the Episcopal Church's involvement in, and relationship to, other churches and ecumenical organizations on common liturgical and social matters. Of particular note in this period is the Episcopal Church's participation in the Consultation on Church Unity (COCU), which was initiated by the General Assembly of the United Presbyterian Church in May 1961. The Episcopal Church and other mainline denominations were invited to engage in a united church that would be "truly Catholic, truly Reformed, and truly Evangelical."
