Maurice Votaw was a devoted Episcopalian who helped found the School of Journalism at St. John’s University in Shanghai when he was only 22 years old. For the next seventeen years, he taught journalistic writing, history, principles of journalism and advertising, and copy editing. In 1939, he became an advisor to the Chinese Ministry of Information in Chungking, where he remained for nine years while also serving on several relief committees to provide medical and financial aid to victims of the war, refugees, and struggling Episcopal clergy. He returned to the United States in 1949 and taught journalism at the University of Missouri until his retirement in 1970.

The Papers of Maurice Votaw document his tenure at the School of Journalism at St. John’s University in Shanghai, China, which he also helped found. Correspondence, reports, published material, photographs, oral history transcripts, and memorabilia make up the collection. A significant portion of the correspondence details his efforts on behalf of the missionaries in China during WWII.
