Abstract

Lyman Cunningham Ogilby was a teacher and chaplain at the Brent School in the Philippines from 1949 to 1952. From 1953 until his retirement in 1967 he served as both Suffragan Bishop and Missionary Bishop of the Philippines. In spite of his attachment to the Brent School and to the Philippines, Ogilby saw his true ministry as a missionary bishop, whose calling was in part to prepare missionary dioceses of the Church for self-support. Ogilby returned to the United States in 1967 to serve in several episcopal capacities.

The papers of Bishop Ogilby comprise printed materials, photograph albums, and some miscellaneous loose photographs. The primary value of this collection is the material pertaining to the Brent School in the Philippines and the relationship of the Ogilby family to the school. Although some of the photographs date back as far as 1913, most of the materials reflect the 1950s and 1960s during the rebuilding of the school after World War II.
