Abstract

The Rev. Canon Henri Alexandre Stines, born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on October 29, 1923, was a dynamic and formidable preacher, parish builder, multilingual liturgist, and proponent of racial equality and nonviolence during the Civil Rights era. Through his direct ministry in urban congregations such as Grace Episcopal Church in Detroit, Church of the Atonement in Washington, DC., and Trinity Episcopal Church on the south side of Chicago, Stines was an outspoken critic of racism and sexism in the Episcopal Church. From 1964 to 1966 he served as a director for the Episcopal Society of Cultural and Racial Unity (ESCRU).
