Abstract
The General Convention is the bicameral legislature and chief policy making body of The Episcopal Church. Established in 1789 by Article I of the Constitution of The Episcopal Church, it consists of the House of Bishops and the House of Deputies. It is the highest council of the Church that governs the American province of the Anglican Communion, including the United States and several overseas dioceses in Central and South America.
The General Convention meets once every three years to consider legislation proposed by bishops, deputies, official interim bodies of General Convention, and dioceses and provinces. This polity and process bears similarity to and draws inspiration from the bicameral legislation of the United States.
