    • Abstract: The Division of College Work has its beginnings in 1918 as a National Council commission in the Department of Religious Education. It grew out of a need to address the changing landscape of higher education in the early decades of the twentieth century when many students were choosing secular institutions over denominational colleges. In 1940, the work was organized as an autonomous division on equal footing with the Christian Education Department, but placed within the Home Department. The division was involved in establishing college chaplaincies, supporting local parish work, and creating missions to young women and minorities, ministering to the university population. The division was briefly renamed the College and University Division in 1963 and was disbanded with the Home Department in 1968.
