Abstract

Founded in 1951 by the Rev. Dr. David A. Works in North Conway, New Hampshire, the North Conway Institute sought to influence alcohol policy within churches and public institutions through a progressive, medically informed approach. Rejecting abstinence-based models, NCI promoted a combination of Alcoholics Anonymous principles and scientific understanding. Relocating to Boston in 1962, NCI developed a national presence through partnerships with religious, medical, and governmental organizations. It co-founded The Ecumenical Council on Alcohol Programs and contributed to the widely influential 1967 Cooperative Commission on the Study of Alcoholism report. Works’s leadership earned national recognition, including appointments to federal and state advisory boards. The Institute also provided pastoral and practical support to individuals and families dealing with alcoholism.
