Abstract

The absorption of the United Stewardship Council into the National Council of Churches in 1950, coupled with a reorganization of the National Council’s Department of Publications, resulted in the establishment of the Stewardship Division, later known as the Division of Stewardship and Missionary Information. Under the direction of the Department of Publications, the new division was tasked with year-round teaching of the principles of stewardship throughout the Church. Its main focus was the continuation of the Every Member Canvass program, which in addition to producing workshops and training materials, provided education and best practices to every parish and mission in the Church. In 1970, General Convention created the first institutional Development Office of the DFMS, appointing Oscar Carr as Executive Director and the Rev. Richard J. Anderson as Stewardship Officer. Between 1971 and 1977, Carr advanced Church-wide stewardship through training, publications, and resource development, signaling a new emphasis on education, planned giving, and major fundraising.
