Dr. Charles Lawrence II and Dr. Margaret Lawrence. Papers

The papers of Charles Radford Lawrence and Margaret Morgan Lawrence document Charles’s activities as a sociologist, professor, civil rights activist, and President of the House of Deputies of The Episcopal Church. The archive contains lectures, sermons, addresses, correspondence, photographs, audio recordings, news clippings, and awards and honoraria from 1936 through 1986 with some earlier collected works and photographs. Margaret Lawrence’s work and research, which centered on the long-term effects of racism on the health of black families, is also featured in the collection.

Domestic Mission and Program Administration

A category that distinguishes the establishment of foreign mission churches and the missionaries sent by the DFMS, including personnel records generated on individuals engaged in work outside the United States and in Episcopal Church provincial jurisdiction. The records document recruitment, training, and placement of DFMS missionaries or representatives, mission volunteers, and others engaged in evangelism or service work abroad or in technical assistance to others in jurisdictions beyond the United States. The records also frequently contain abundant personal information on individual experiences in foreign service.

Domestic Mission: Program Administration and Coordination

A category of records that includes executive-level planning and management of Domestic Mission offices, staff and activities. It may include policy documents, budgets and staffing decisions, planning documents, and reports to the Presiding Bishop, Council, and General Convention bodies. (See also AR PB 02 Administration, Administrative Officers, and Canons for overlapping areas of domestic program coordination).

Division of Town and Country. Roanridge Training and Conference Center. Records

From 1945 to 1977 Roanridge Training and Conference Center in Missouri was the primary center of operation for the Division of Town and Country within the Home Department, although the two entities were structurally distinct. The Division’s records contain administrative and program files, conference materials, reports generated by the Division (often in consultation with Roanridge or with persons affiliated with the National Council’s Unit of Research and Field Study), and resource materials formerly housed in the Roanridge Library. Of particular interest in the latter series is a scrapbook collected by Edna Eastwood on the Church’s early ministry to the “isolated,” and a set of surveys generated by the Unit of Research and Field Study. Also present are subject files and correspondence documenting field visits and consultations to rural areas throughout the country.
